How to prepare for a fun-filled Desert Safari Tour in Abu Dhabi

Desert Safari Tours are essentially a close encounter with the nature itself. It is thus best to be comfortably dressed to fully feel and enjoy this nature-touring outdoor activity. Preparing oneself for a desert safari tour includes:

- General Preparations

- Personal Dressing & Extra-Clothing

- Personal Skin Care Products

- Baby Feeding & Caring Items/Pregnant Women (in case of traveling with kids) (Note that unlike popular perception you can always leave your underage kids with your spouse or guardian at the desert camp while heading out for the Dune Bashing activity)

- Extra-Cash for Souvenirs etc.

General Preparations

1. The tour starts around 2pm. Since it is a safari tour you have chosen please ensure that you have an early and light lunch. Since the desert safari’s main attraction is the dune bashing activity, which is pretty much a roller coaster in a 4×4 luxury vehicle, having a loaded stomach may give nausea.

2. Memories are forever. Keep a camera or a video camera, if you like, to capture your tour to enjoy later with friends and family.

3. Keep a pair of sunglasses, a hat and maybe a scarf to keep you comfortable under the sun and in case the sand is blowing.

Personal Dressing & Extra-Clothing

1. Wear clothes that are comfortable, loose and appropriate for the weather. Note that the temperature in deserts drop a few degrees in the evening you may like to take a light cardigan just in case.

2. Prefer wearing full length clothes. Choose light colors and lightweight fabric. This will help you against temperature & sun-burn. Choose cotton or other breathing materials for your outfits. Safari clothes are good too.

3. Sand is the word where ever you will go over the course of your desert safari tour. Wear shoes that are for sand to spill through or easy to take off to enjoy the silky smooth sand floor under your feet. Sandals, flip flops and the likes are recommended.

4. Keep an extra pair for yourself in case you prefer a fresh pair of clothing for a good night sleep or journey back to the city. It is also useful in case your clothing is damaged or stained by mistake. This may especially prove helpful in case there are kids traveling with you.

Personal Skin Care Products

1. Keep a sun-block or other ointment if your skin is too sensitive. Experience in the desert is all about being outdoors with the nature. You can enjoy your best by taking just that extra little care depending on your skin sensitivity.

2. Do not wear heavy makeup or creams since it may cause inconvenience due to sweating. Though our vehicles are air-conditioned, the desert’s A/C is turned to warm during the day and pleasant by the evening :)

Baby Feeding & Caring Items

1. Desert Safari is not recommended for newborns or children under the age of 2 years. While you can always choose to leave your family in the safety of the camp before you head out on the Dune Bashing activity, the general temperatures in the desert are not convenient for the little ones. Please seek advice from our sales representative or your tour guide before booking.

2. You will need to bring extra clothing, towel, baby cream, diapers, milk formula, feeding bottles and all other necessary items. While commercially available bottled water is available at the camp if there are any special water treatment needs you might want to consider bringing the desired quantity with yourself. Plan the ration accordingly for a halfday or overnight desert safari. Always keep a little extra in case of over stay or spillage/wastage.

3. Pregnant women are advised to not take the desert safari tour unless they have expressed permission by their doctor. Dune Bashing is not permitted for infants and pregnant women. The tour operator takes no responsibility for undisclosed travel by the guest. We insist to take full care and disclose your medical condition BEFORE you confirm your travel with us. This is in your own best interest. We care for you.

Extra Cash

1. You may like to keep some extra cash to make purchases at the camp souvenir shop, quad bike rides and other activities which are not included in your desert safari package. If you have any questions please do clarify before booking or departure with our tour guide or sales representative.

Please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive list for preparations. Every journey, long or short, require for all of us to make appropriate preparations. This post is simply meant to draw your attention to YOUR personal traveling needs while planning for a desert safari tour. We hope this post is useful.

ABET Tourism – Heritage inspired unique Desert Safari experience

ABET Desert Safari & Tourism presents a true bedouin experience

Photo Credit: Alia Jeiroudi for The National

ABU DHABI // Matar al Mansoori took a big risk when he set up Al Badeyah Eyes Tourism last summer in a place where desert safaris are 10-a-penny. He knew he had to offer something different if he wanted to carve out a niche in the market. Al Badeyah, meaning “the life of the Bedouin”, is how he wants his guests to see his camp, through the eyes of the Bedouin. The camp is bedecked with luxurious tents in the area where he grew up, close to his family farm.

Giving his visitors a more authentic experience than the expected belly dancer and shisha pipe, the experience focuses instead on the real culture and heritage of Bedouin life. Mr al Mansoori, 34, is among a generation of young Emiratis launching their own small businesses. He has been employed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1998; during his tenure he worked with the country’s ambassadors in Morocco and South Africa.

“They say success is a long journey and along the way you must face a lot of obstacles and failures,” he said of his business, “but I must continue with this.” Born in Liwa and raised in the Al Khazna area in Al Ain, he dreamed of starting his own business many years ago. But it was the Khalifa Fund that finally made it a reality. Although more than 550 people have been on Mr al Mansoori’s tours since they began in August he is in no hurry to expand his payroll, even if it means working seven days a week and driving guests himself.

“We’re keeping it small and simple for now while we make this successful,” he said.
